Baa, Baa Black Sheep

My mom is a preschool teacher and has asked me to make some finger puppets to go with the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle. I will be posting the patterns for each of the puppets as I get them finished. Below is the pattern for the black sheep.

Black Sheep Finger Puppet

 

Materials Needed:

 

Size 7 steel crochet hook

Size 10 black crochet thread

Size 10 light brown crochet thread

Black embroidery thread

Yarn needle

Fiberfill

abbreviations used:

ch      chain

st      stitch

sc       single crochet

sc dec      single crochet decrease

yo      yarn over

t r     triple crochet

tr dec     triple crochet decrease

special stitch:

tr dec:Step 1:yo the hook twice and then insert hook into next st.

Step 2:yo and draw hook through st (there should be 4 loops on your hook)

Step 3: yo and draw through 2 loops (there should be 3 loops on your hook)

Step 4: yo and draw through 2 loops (there should be 2 loops on your hook)

Step 5:yo the hook twice and then insert hook into next st.

Step 6: yo and draw hook through st (there should be 5 loops on your hook)

Step 7: yo and draw through 2 loops (there should be 4 loops on your hook)

Step 8:yo and draw through 2 loops (there should be 3 loops on your hook)

Step 9: yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

*Ch 1 at the start of a round does not count as a stitch.

Instructions:

 

Head:

 

Start with light brown crochet thread.

Round 1:make an adjustable ring, ch1, 6 sc in ring, join.(6 sc)

 

Round 2:ch 1, 2 sc in the same st as join and in each st around, join.(12 sc)

 

Round 3:ch 1, 2 sc in the same st as join, 1 sc in the next st, *2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next st, repeat from * around, join.(18 sc)

 

Round 4:ch 1, 2 sc in the same st as join, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, *2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, repeat from * around, join.(24 sc)

 

Round 5:ch 1, 2 sc in the same st as join, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, *2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, repeat from * around, join.(30 sc)

 

Rounds 6 -7:ch 1, 1 sc in the same st as join and in each st around, join.(30 sc)

 

At the end of round 7, change to black crochet thread.

 

Round 8:ch 1, sc in same st as join, tr in next st, *sc in next st, tr in next st, repeat from * around, join. (30 sts)

 

Round 9:ch 4 (counts as beginning tr), sc in next st, *tr in next st, sc in next st, repeat from* around, join.(30 sts)

 

Round 10:ch 1, sc in same st as join, tr in next st, *sc in next st, tr in next st, repeat from * around, join. (30 sts)

 

Round 11:ch 4 (counts as beginning tr), sc in next st, *tr in next st, sc in next st, repeat from* around,

 

Round 12:ch 1, sc in same st as join, tr in next st, *sc in next st, tr in next st, repeat from * around, join. (30 sts)

 

Round 13:ch 4 (counts as beginning tr), sc in next st, *tr in next st, sc in next st, repeat from* around, join.(30 sts)

 

Round 14:ch 1, sc dec over same st as join and next st, tr in next st, sc in next st, tr in next st, *sc dec over next 2 sts, tr in next st, sc in next st, tr in next st, repeat from * around, join.(24 sts)

 

Round 15:ch 4 (counts as beginning tr), sc dec over next 2 sts, tr in next st, sc dec over next 2 sts, tr in next st, sc in next st, *tr in next st, sc dec over next 2 sts, tr in next st, sc dec over next 2 sts, tr in next st, sc in next st, repeat from * around, join.(18 sts)

 

Stuff head with fiberfill.

 

Round 16:ch 1, sc dec over same st as join and next st, tr in next st, * sc dec over next 2 sts, tr in next st, repeat from * around, join. (12 sts)

 

Round 17:ch 1, sc dec over same st as join and next st, tr dec over next 2 sts, *sc dec over next 2 sts, tr dec over next 2 sts, repeat from * around, join, finish off and weave in ends.(6 sts)

 

Embroider eyes, nose and mouth to face (light brown part).

 

Ears (use light brown crochet thread and make 2):

 

Inner ear (make 2 for each ear):

 

Row 1:ch 3, sc in second ch from hook and in next ch, ch 1, turn.

 

Row 2:sc in each sc, ch ,1 turn.

 

Row 3:sc dec over next 2 scs,finish off, weave in ends.

 

Outer ear:

 

Put 2 inner ear pieces together, 5 sc around first side of ear, (sc, ch 3, sc in sc dec at top of inner ear), 5 sc around second side of ear, finish off, weave in ends.

 

Sew ears to side of sheep’s head.

 

Body (use black crochet thread):

 

Round 1:make an adjustable ring, ch1, 6 sc in ring, join.(6 sc)

 

Round 2:ch 1, 2 sc in the same st as join and in each st around, join.(12 sc)

 

Round 3:ch 1, 2 sc in the same st as join, 1 sc in the next st, *2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next st, repeat from * around, join.(18 sc)

 

Round 4:ch 1, 2 sc in the same st as join, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, *2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, repeat from * around, join.(24 sc)

 

Round 5:ch 1, 2 sc in the same st as join, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, *2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, repeat from * around, join.(30 sc)

 

Rounds 6 – 22:ch 1, 1 sc in the same st as join and in each st around, join.(30 sc)

 

After row 22, finish off and weave in ends. Sew the head to the top of the body.

 

Arms (make 2):

 

Start with light brown crochet thread.

 

Round 1:make an adjustable ring, ch1, 4 sc in ring, join.(4 sc)

 

Round 2:ch 1, 2 sc in the same st as join and in each st around, join.(8 sc)

 

Round 3:ch 1, sc in same st as join and in each st around, join.(8 sc)

 

Change to black crochet thread.

 

Rounds 4 – 12:ch 1, sc in same st as join and in each st around, join.(8 sc)

 

After round 12, leaving a long tail for sewing, finish off.Sew arm to side of body.`
